It is a significant complement to our exhibits and public programming in support of our mission: to promote the understanding and appreciation of Art and Science to enrich the lives of all people. JANUARY January 9, 2020, Thursday, 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Bruce Presents: Duchamp to De Kooning, Kahlo to Koons: 100 Years, 100 Works of Art. Can a single work of art symbolize a year in history? Renowned art historian Dr. Agnes Berecz faced this dilemma while writing 100 Years, 100 Artworks: A History of Modern and Contemporary Art, which presents and thoroughly details one work for art to sum up every year between 1918 and 2008. Join Dr. Berecz – along with Katja Zigerlig, Vice President of Fine Art, Wine & Collectibles at Berkley One – for an interactive discussion of the criteria that guided the choices found in the book. In a twist, the audience will be invited to vote on 10 artworks – one for each decade covered in the volume. Each transmutes perceptions with a different style and creates works that reflect the interests, concerns, and beliefs that drive their creativity.
Frances Ashforth’s paintings of horizons, rock formations, and nature’s motion highlight her environmental focus. Lori Glavin paints abstract recollections of her domestic and garden worlds with attention to the accumulated clutter that inevitably attaches to familiar surroundings. Justin Kim uses his memories of specific places and reconstitutes colorful scenes according to his perceptions of the experience. Shona Macdonald presents reflective landscapes of nature’s transience that are almost ethereally charged. The paintings invite viewers to regard familiar spaces in new ways.

Masterpieces from the Museum of Cartoon Art is showcasing more than 100 original works celebrating the history of this unique art form in America. There are representations of all the cartoon genres, including comic strips, newspaper panels, comic books, editorial cartoons, magazine cartoons, caricature, illustration and animation. The artwork is on loan from The Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a recreation of the Museum of Cartoon Art’s Hall of Fame. Thirty-two artists were elected to this prestigious group between 1975 and 1997 including Walt Disney, Milton Caniff, Chuck Jones, Rube Goldberg, Al Capp, and Herblock. The first institution dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of cartoon art, the Museum of Cartoon Art was opened in Greenwich in August 1974. Founded by cartoonist and longtime Greenwich resident Mort Walker, it moved to Port Chester/Rye Brook, NY, in 1977, reopened in Boca Raton, FL, in 1996, and donated its collection to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum in 2008. Masterpieces from the Museum of Cartoon Art promises to provide an entertaining and educational experience for visitors of all ages and, for those who remember the institution during its time in the area, a nostalgic rediscovery of what the museum had to offer.* For more information please visit www.bruecemuseum.org
